Mount Errigal, Donegal, Ireland. Stepping Stones

Mount Errigal Stepping Stones County Donegal by Aidan Monaghan Mount Errigal situated in Gweedore County Donegal, is the tallest peak of the Derryveagh Mountains in Northwest Ireland. This had been my third visit to Gweedore to photograph Mount Errigal. I had arrived at the location in the late afternoon and waited a total of five hours before getting the final photograph. Being at a location for this period of time allows you to immerse yourself in the surroundings. I find that I become very aware and attuned to the sense of stillness and peacefulness that only exists in such remote locations as this in County Donegal. I watched the stillness of Lough Altan like plate glass only broken by the occasional jumping trout catching fly on its surface. I also observed the vast unending flow of white cumulus clouds pass across Mount Errigal making their way inland from the Atlantic Ocean. These were beautiful to watch and caused subtle changes in light and shade as the day wore on and the sun became lower in the sky. Just before sunset there was a brief fleeting period in which Mount Errigal was perfectly reflected in Lough Altan below. It was at this point I made my final capture. The symmetry of the photography is broken by five stepping stones in the foreground . The stepping stones combine with the white spiral wisp of cloud rising above Mount Errigal and also reflected in Lough Altan, to distort the sense of scale and depth. This produces a very dynamic composition leading the viewer’s eye into the depth of the photograph and the solid pyramidal shape of Mount Errigal, side lit by the golden light of the setting sun.
