Cara Na Mara, Bunbeg, County Donegal, Ireland
Ship Wreck Bunbeg
by Aidan Monaghan
The wrecked ‘Cara Na Mara’ (Friend of the Sea) on the tidal sandbanks of the Magheraclogher Beach County Donegal. Known to the locals as ‘Bád Eddie’ (Eddie’s Boat) the ship ran aground in the early 1970’s due to severe weather conditions at sea. Today the carcass of a hull has taken on an organic quality, seething with colour and texture as thousands of crustacea cling to and are embedded within its timbers.
The daily high tide at Bunbeg continues to reach the wreck, but this is not enough to free it from the sandbank upon which it is held prisoner. Only the slow but relentless passing of time aided by the processes of decay, will eventually return the ‘Cara Na Mara’ to the sea.
