‘Samson’
H & W Shipyard
Belfast
County Antrim
by Aidan Monaghan
Photographic study of Samson, H&W shipyard 2007 before redevelopment of Titanic Quarter.

The twin shipbuilding gantry cranes Samson and Goliath are situated at Queen’s Island, Belfast. The cranes, which were named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath dominate the Belfast skyline and are landmark structures of the city.

The lithographic treatment of the photograph with its stark contrast between light and shade was intended to depict the epic and gargantuan nature of the crane ‘Samson’.
