Winter Dawn
Florence Court
County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland
Photograph by Aidan Monaghan
A heavy frost covers the grounds of Florence Court Castle County Fermanagh on a crisp winter’s morning. The photograph was taken at dawn in late December. The main facade of the 18th century mansion house is lit by the first rays of light as the sun rises in the east. In the foreground, an oak tree stands among a pasture and is silhouetted against the blue and red of the dawn sky. Cuilcagh Mountain sits slumbering in the background.

I had driven several miles in freezing conditions with great care, to view this dawn. Such extreme winter conditions do produce the most incredible settings for photography. In composing the photograph, I found it interesting how the thick frost transforms the scene and turns the pasture into a crystal blanket that wraps around and pulls together the three key elements of the photograph, the oak tree, the Castle and Cuilcagh Mountain. Finally the eye is led towards the clear blue sky above with its subtle wisp of cloud.
