In The Footsteps
by Aidan Monaghan
A solitary figure stands on top of one of the stacks of interlocking basalt columns at the Giants Causeway, County Antrim. In the foreground the tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. The photograph was taken just after sunset in late summer. As the setting sun sinks beneath the horizon the magnificent after-glow fills the scene with subtle tones of pink and magenta.
In this study of the Causeway, I was interested in playing with the sense of scale that the introduction of a human figure within the scene has. This intervention impacts upon how we read and interpret the photograph. The title ‘In the Footsteps of Giants’ , implies a reference to the legend in which the Irish warrior Fionn mac Cumhail’s wife, Oonagh, disguises him as a baby. Thus convincing the rival giant, Benadonner, when he saw the size of the ‘infant’, he assumed the alleged father, Fionn, must be gigantic.
By the same token the there is a certain ambiguity in relation to scale of the solitary figure in the photography. This is in part due to their elevated position, but moreover because they a set in the context of a landscape that it relatively alien to our normal everyday experience. The very unique landscape of the causeway offers a limited range of reference points against which we can measure the true scale of things. Thus creating a distorted sense of scale throughout the photograph.
